Global Standardisation

Had bought a digital clock and an answering machine from the US, for use in India. Plugged it in and found that the answering machine does not display caller id and also does not pick up when in answering mode. Difference I guess between the US and Indian telephony systems. Plugged in the clock and found that it loses about 10 minutes each hour. Realized that it probably takes the clock frequency from the line 60 Hz, as against the 50 Hz in India. A loss of about 60 $, but set me thinking on the question of global standardisation....
